Tips on Overseas (and Local) Job Hunting

Many of us in the Philippines wish to go abroad for obvious reasons: better pay, financial security for family or find better opportunities elsewhere. And while competition has grown when it comes to jobs typically available for Filipinos, our nature as hard-worker, friendly and dignified employees continue to make us highly employable. Such demand for jobs dedicated to Filipinos can be manifested through job vacancies we find on newspapers, job websites or endorsements from officials.

Since job hunting for overseas positions can be described as another playing field (unlike locally where age discrimination and low wages continue to be black spots in local job market), being aware of many things is a crucial step in following the right path.

We present the following tips on (hopefully) landing a good job abroad.

Prepare a comprehensive résumé
With so many applicants now with access to the Internet, it becomes a channel of choice for job hunters. Therefore, with so many candidates to choose from, it is very important to have a well-prepared curriculum vitae. This is not only to attract potential employers, but also to showcase your qualifications properly through your resume, arguably the first — and to many applicants, the only — channel you can use to convince recruiters you are the best match for the position.

Common types of resumes are functional and chronological. Functional resumes highlight your skills and achievements, while chronological resumes describe a timeline of your employment and career progression. Comprehensive resume doesn’t mean you have a lengthy four-page CV to show, but it is a resume that hopes to answer all possible questions recruiters might ask while scanning your document.

An effective résumé should be concise, well-written and presentable. It should ideally fit in two pages, and should not be more than three pages long.

Search for best listings for job openings
While a typical route to take is the employment agency which lists a variety of jobs available, it is also possible to look for jobs on your own.

1.Grab a copy of the Sunday issue of Manila Bulletin as it contains multiple pages of job vacancies in both the Philippines and abroad.
2.Go to reputable websites to register profile and submit your resume. Do not entertain offers found on free classifieds, Facebook posts or comments on work related blog articles
3.Join job fairs and seek advice from DOLE, POEA or even TV stations for scheduled overseas job fairs.
In an age where illegal recruiters can easily dupe you into applying for a job that doesn’t exist, refrain from entertaining job offers from people who are not in the position to recruit manpower for overseas jobs. Even when friends or family members tell you of a job offer they read somewhere, exercise caution and always verify with authorities before submitting personal information — CVs contain information like address, phone number that can be used to steal your identity — and money.

Ace the interview
Needless to say, this is one of the most important steps in getting that job abroad. Interviewers will be impressed with short, concise answers instead of an elaborate, meatless responses. Highlight your skills and achievements you feel is necessary to impress your interviewer. Always think of what you can contribute the company and offer ideas if possible. It is more important to mention your skills and capabilities than secondary achievements like you attended a low-profile seminar or won best in art in high school.

While you want to get the job, the instance you fail to give a confident answer could be a blessing in disguise; you don’t want to land a job where you don’t know how to handle your responsibilities.

While some overseas jobs offer training, most would rather employ candidates who have skills and experience and don’t need training. So if you feel this job doesn’t suit your skills, let go of it and look for something else. Not to sound like you are selective on your potential jobs, interviews are two-way communication, you get to ask your potential employers and check whether they fit your expectations. So if you feel there is job mismatch, politely say you think you don’t fit the requirements and leave the room in good terms.

Have important documents ready
In the event of a successful job interview, the next step is to process your papers on a relevant agency. Along the way, your records will be require for further processing. Therefore, it is good to secure documents such as medical examination results (often asked when you have secured the job), NBI clearance, passport, authenticated birth certificates, college transcript and diploma, among others.
